How security deposits work in New Brunswick
New Brunswick caps the security deposit at one month's rent for most leases, one week for week-to-week, and up to three months for a mobile-home site. Your deposit is held by Service New Brunswick, not the landlord, and the landlord must remit it within 15 days. Once they do, Service New Brunswick mails you a Certificate of Deposit confirming it was received.
When you move out, there is a short window for a landlord to claim against the deposit. If you disagree, the Tenant and Landlord Relations Office (formerly the Residential Tenancies Tribunal) settles it. Keep dated move-in and move-out photos so you have a clear record.
